Somatic EMDR is a somatic-based therapeutic approach utilizing EMDR that helps individuals improve their awareness of physical sensations and maintain presence in their daily lives. It aims to move activation through the nervous system rather than suppressing it, leading to a calmer state of existence and increased presence. By sustaining awareness of sensations, individuals can experience more moments of calm and resolve dilemmas or issues more effectively. Somatic EMDR therapy also helps in accessing and releasing suppressed emotions, contributing to overall healing. For survivors of trauma, this can be experienced as the body finally sensing that the danger has passed and is over, allowing the person to feel safe in the present time.
If you have any kind of mental health, autoimmune, GI, or any other system issue, your nervous system/body is likely struggling to get out of stress state and there’s work to be done. Living in stress states will lead to allostatic load, adrenal fatigue, which leads to bodily dysfunction. Basically, where the person feels like garbage mentally and physically. Most people don’t even realize how much they live in their head perpetuating a stress state, mental/emotional suffering, and remain disconnected from their body (which means you’re suppressing).
If you are a human and you’re alive, you have a system that needs to be cared for well or you will not feel well and get sick. This is a hard and simple truth of human nature combined with science. Your system can be deprived/neglected for so long before it will start breaking down. We can like this or not, and it is still the deal with being human and what it takes to live well in this world.
Overall, through Somatic EMDR therapy, one can improve their noticing of physical sensations and an ability to stay with themselves versus self-abandon, so activation can move through versus being suppressed in the nervous system. Learning how to sustain awareness of sensations is the golden ticket for decreasing how often we exist in stress state (fight/flight/freeze/fawn), which will lead to increased presence in our daily living.
You may notice that a particular dilemma or issue will feel less activating as it gets moved through to resolution/completion and improved clarity on said issue. For example, when a client gets to the place of feeling clear on what they need to do in a difficult situation, whether that’s to let go, accept the reality that it’s happened, and being able to move through it (feel the pain), so acceptance can be reached.
If you have been suppressing your emotions/stress/pain in life, you may notice that you can start accessing and feeling (which means releasing) pent up emotions that you haven’t been able to access and move through previously. Feeling = Healing.
This is a great question to discuss in consultation or in session, where we can get clear on expectations from the start.
There is no cookie cutter answer to this common question. The answer will be individualistic and different for each person. All painful past experiences link together neurologically, so it may be that you work through one issue and then a different pain point arises naturally. The body is capable and meant to heal itself, so it’s going to automatically bring up painful experiences if it’s ecological to release them through the nervous system. This all speaks to the three drives of human nature: our drive for completion, drive for protection, and drive for connection…The body naturally knows it is meant to be free, to be safe, and to connect with others.
